I remember how the the organizing committee asked the members of the Veterans Fast For Life Support Group to come up with ideas for a name for the groups to be sent to the war zones of Nicaragua. I had the honor of being the one to come up with Veterans Peace Action Teams, with the acronym VPAT. I had figured that since we were veterans, and since we were going to be doing actions for peace, in the form of teams, and since the military loves to use acronyms, that we should come up with, what I felt, was an obvious name with a great acronym - one that the powers-that-be would understand, and that would be easy for folks to remember. I passed this on to Steve Brooks, who was a member of the organizing committee, and the committee decided to use it. And the rest, as they say, is history.
