My little girl's dad was born in the Finger Lakes region, has a little bit of Seneca ancestry and told me that the reason most of the Iroquois sided with the British is they had already, prior to the war, signed a peace treaty with England and did not wish to go back on their word. It was basically like, "Look, we'd rather fight on your side, but we don't break our promises."

The Oneida were the only Iroquois nation not sent to a reservation later on, so Matt tells me. Why? Because they were the one nation of that confederacy that sided with us, and in fact had taken food to Valley Forge for Washington and his troops. That Washington turned around and butchered allies of the Oneida in such a way is shocking to say the least. I don't doubt it, I'm just really sad to find this out. I had thought better of him.
