clearly, the person who carried out this horrific act in aurora was messed up. things like this don't just happen out of the blue. the warning signs were there, but were not heeded.

it's so sad and tragic for all those involved, including the gunman. he is a victim too. a victim of a culture where so many of its citizens can easily turn a blind eye to the suffering of another, as long as those affected are not part of "us". a victim of a society where killing is an accepted method for acquiring what we want or for settling disputes. our history is laden with the dead recipients of our greedy violence, thoughtless massacre, and callous genocide.

this person did not receive the help he so desperately needed and now it's too late. who will help us? the warning signs are all around that we cannot continue with an economic and social system that permits so many to suffer and die so that a few can reap the benefits; or that allows the very chemical makeup of our atmosphere to be altered to the point where it is now becoming detrimental to life as we know it; or whose very existence requires us to keep buying, keep consuming, keep creating more waste, in order to feed this ridiculous notion of linear unlimited growth on a finite world.

we ignore the warning signs at our own peril. how many more have to needlessly suffer and die before we realize there's a better way to exist here?
